Quiet Hour Rules and May Day Reminders from Public Safety

Twenty-four hour quiet hours have gone in effect as of yesterday, April 29 and will be in effect for the remainder of finals week. Students who violate 24-hour quiet hours may be asked to leave campus immediately, regardless of their final exam schedule, so please plan accordingly.

From 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. each night, quiet hours will be lifted so that students can blow off steam and relax.

All non-graduating students must leave 24 hours after their final examination or by Saturday, May 8 at 12 p.m. whichever comes first.

May Day will be celebrated this evening and tomorrow evening. While we encourage students to enjoy themselves this May Day, Public Safety asks you to use common sense and good judgment. According to Director of Public Safety Jerry Roderick, Washington College is not exempt from Maryland law, which includes statutes against exposing yourself in public. Public indecency, or exposing one’s body in such a manner that may be seen by someone who could be offended, is also a violation of the WC policy regarding sexually inappropriate behavior.

What began as an enjoyable and isolated activity on our campus has evolved into an event that sometimes attracts outsiders and has the potential to cause embarrassment and harm to the participants. Not only have serious injury, alcohol poisonings, and sexual assaults occurred in the not-too-distant past, but those who take part may be subject to highly undesirable publicity, Roderick said.

As you know, hand-held phones, cameras, PDAs, etc. take photographs and and transmit them instantly to others or to the internet. Please think about the risks to you and others, and use your good judgment in celebrating May Day this year, Roderick said.
