Halloween is famous for its chills and thrills, but this weekend Washington College is taking extra precautions to keep the devils, witches, and other masqueraders on campus safe.

Patrol staff will be working in the evenings, and a few resident assistants will be joining Public Safety for rounds on Sunday night. On a holiday of tricks and treats, it is important that students are careful not to “overindulge in alcohol” or get caught up in any “group craziness,” said Carl Crowe, Associate Dean of Students.

One of the biggest worries regarding this holiday is the group mentality that often appears with large, excited groups of young adults. The anonymity of a mask sometimes seems to bestow bravery that often crosses over into recklessness. So what exactly will Public Safety do for this wild holiday and all of its reveling tricksters?

“We’ve stocked up on ammunition,” said Jerry Roderick, director of Public Safety. With Halloween comes mischief night, and with that, destruction of property and other mayhem. Public Safety will definitely be keeping an eye out, but its main objective is to be available for anyone who needs assistance.

Roderick reminds students that Safe Ride will be running this weekend, and students should try not to get separated from their friends. With elaborate costumes and masks that could limit hearing and vision, some extra pairs of eyes are always welcome when it comes to crossing a street.

As long as they keep a cool head and wisely utilize the resources that have been provided, WC students have nothing to fear this Halloween; it should be quite a treat.
