The third annual Drag Ball sponsored by E.R.O.S. will be held this Saturday evening from 9:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. in The Egg. The event is fairly new to Washington College but has been successful every year.
E.R.O.S. President Lillian Muir said it’s, surprisingly, not too intense to plan such a fun event for the fall semester.
“Planning the event itself isn’t too difficult. We just decide on decorations, the DJ and some specific music that we want them to play, and which organization to send the money we raise at the event to,” said Muir.
What exactly goes on at Drag Ball? “There is always really great music, food and drinks, and people dancing all night,” said Muir. “There are always some planned out drag performances that E.R.O.S. members do, and we let everyone at the event perform if they want to. Last year, for example, we had at least ten unplanned drag performances by students that attended the event.” To encourage students to dress as creatively as they can in drag, Muir adds that they also crown a Drag King and Drag Queen. “The woman best dressed in masculine clothing is crowned Drag King, and the man best dressed in feminine clothing is the Drag Queen,” Muir said. “The results are decided by student voting during the event.” Muir mentioned there will also be a raffle to win prizes, as well.
“Drag Ball is an event meant to create awareness and acceptance of persons outside of gender and sexual norms, and to draw support for the LGBT community from both fellow members of LGBT community and, most importantly, LGBT allies,” said Muir. “Drag Ball is a night where the Washington College community can break out of the norm and dress as another gender or dress in any way each person feels most comfortable. It also allows people to show their support, donate money to EROS’s philanthropy, AIDS research, and have a good time.”
