Walk the Walk and Talk it Up for a Cure: Relay for Life

MTV’s “The Jersey Shore” has slowly crept into the lives of millions of people throughout the country. As you walk across Washington College’s campus and read the signs in every bathroom stall asking if you are “DTF,” the first thought that comes to mind is about the wild characters of Jersey Shore. However, that’s not the case at WC.

WC has teamed up with the American Cancer Society in order to bring Relay for Life to the campus for the first time. “Are you DTF” is the American Cancer Society’s new slogan that stands for “Are you DOWN TO FIGHT” and thus far, the WC community has proven that they are indeed down to do so. Currently five committees have been constructed in order to better organize this massive project.

So, what is Relay for Life? It is a twelve-hour event that the American Cancer Society sponsors in order to raise money to fund cancer research. This year at WC, the walk will take place on April 16, 2011 in the LFC Field House starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 7 a.m. the following day. The motto for Relay for Life is “Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.” The night demonstrates this and so much more. It is kicked off with the survivor lap, which is a walk to recognize those who have won their battle against cancer.  Following this event, a wide variety of exciting activities will take place throughout the night, including a fear factor competition, Miss Relay, karaoke, and “Locks of Love,” so ladies (and gentlemen) keep your hair growing for a good cause.

Following these events there is a Luminaria Ceremony held to remember those who have lost the fight to cancer and for those who have defeated it. The night is jam packed with fun and it is all for a good cause.

Our goal is to raise $35,000 and to have 35 teams. Presently we have already raised over $2,000 and have 31 teams signed up so that means we’re well on our way to meeting, if not exceeding our present goal. To sign up, for a team up or individually, visit http://events.cancer.org/washingtoncollege and join the fight. There is also an event page on Facebook titled “Relay for Life: Washington College, so check it out!”  If you have any questions about the event please contact either dreilly2@washcoll.edu or creihl2@washcoll.edu. Now it is time to ask, WC, are you “DTF”?
