It all came down to the 200 freestyle relay in Saturday’s swim meet between the Shorewomen and McDaniel College. The winner of the event would be the winner of the meet, as the two teams entered the event deadlocked at 94-94.
Freshman Hilary Badger anchored the relay and made up some ground in order to give Washington College the win by one one-hundredth of a second. This earned the team a 105-98 win, as WC improved to 5-5 (2-4) and the Green Terror fell to 2-5 (2-5).
On senior day, the lone Shorewoman senior Rachel Glasser shone. Glasser won three races and broke the pool record for the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:11.06. Also breaking a pool record was the 200 medley team consisting of Badger, Jenna Moore,
Alix Batesko, and Carly Ogren in a winning time of 1:53.34.
In a close meet, “the last relay was a lot of pressure on those girls,” said Coach Lessard, because it all came down to that final race. The team of Badger, Ogren, Morgan Phillips, and Mary Stroman did not disappoint. The team’s final home meet ended in euphoria. Lessard said the day showed all of the athlete’s “hard work paying off” and that “everyone was important,” the win was a real “team effort”.
After such a big win, the Shorewomen hope to carry that momentum into a mid-week meet against conference rival Swartmore, and eventually into the Centennial Conference Championships over the weekend.
