Over spring break the Washington College Shoremen traveled to Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational. During the tournament the Shoremen chalked up 3 wins and 4 losses.
On the first day of tournament action, the Shoremen claimed a 19-7 victory against Gordon. During the game, freshman Mike Love hit a three run home run during the fourth inning increasing the Shoremen’s lead to 11-0. Gordon remained scoreless until the 9th inning, gaining 7 runs by 6 hits and 1 error. With the win, the Shoremen improved to a record of 6-2.
On March 14th, the Shoremen fell to Sewanee 10-7. During the game, junior John Rolewicz hit a three run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Rolewicz was 3-for-3 with 5 RBI with a run scored and 2 walks. The Shoremen fell to Daniel Webster on March 15th with a score of 16-7. Freshman Ian Remington was 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
March 16th saw another loss for the Shoremen in a close game against Husson 8-7. The Shoremen led by three runs in the first inning but Husson was able to come back, scoring in the first two innings and two additional in the third, making the score 4-3. The Shoremen were able to rally on a RBI double from freshman Nick Marinelli in the top of the sixth. At the top of the ninth, the Shoremen were able to tie the game but it was a walk-off pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth that gave Husson the victory.
The Shoremen gained a win on March 17th against Lawrence 14-5. Junior Ryan Normoyle hit a homerun in the bottom of the third, tied his career high with four hits, and had a career high in both RBI (6) and bases (8). Junior Hunter Draheim collected the win on the mound where he allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and four walks in six innings.
The Shoremen fell to Massachusetts Boston on March 18th 15-5. During the game, Remington was 3-for-4 and raised the Shoremen’s batting average to .500. Remington’s outstanding play over the past week earned him Centennial Conference Baseball Player of the Week. He batted .615 for the week, which led the team as he went 16-26 from the plate. He held the team high of four doubles, 20 total bases and a .643 on-base percentage. Remington also scored seven runs during the week and is in the middle of a nine-game multi-hit streak and has hit safely in 11 consecutive games.
On the last day of tournament action, the Shoremen claimed a victory against St. Norbert 7-2. The Shoremen were able to grab a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third by a two-run double by sophomore Tyler Cotterell. The Shoremen had one run in the fourth and three additional runs in the sixth inning.
Junior pitcher Kevin Lynch got the win and is 1-0 for the season. At the end of the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational, the Shoremen have improved their record 8-6.
The Shoremen return to action with a home Centennial Conference game against Muhlenberg College at 12:30.
