Softball Finishes Break with Winning Record

The Washington College softball team traveled to Fort Myers, FL to play in the Gene Cusic Classic March 14th-17th during Spring Break. After playing eight games in total, two games each day over four days, the team’s record was 5-3.

The WC softball team opened tournament play last Monday with a pair of wins over Delaware Valley and Nichols. Sophomore Brittany Walter hit a walk-off two-run double and picked up the win in the circle as the Shorewomen rallied past Delaware Valley 6-5, in their first game of the day. Walter was 3-for-3 with a walk in the contest, driving in three runs. In the circle, she struck out eight batters while walking one and gave up five hits. Freshman Lauren Dockrill was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the win for the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen followed that win up by scoring all four fourth-inning runs in a 4-1 victory over Nichols. Dockrill and Sally Snover each went 2-for-3 in the win.

Junior Meaghan Kimme picked up the win in the circle, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out two batters. Freshman Kylie Nottingham doubled off the right-center wall and scored on a Glascock single two batters later. Sophomore Shaelan Nottingham drove in Walter with a single two batters later to make it 2-0. Dockrill followed by reaching on a fielder’s choice as Glascock scored on an error on the play. Junior Jill Piasecki singled to center field driving in junior Kristine Cunningham, which put WC on the board with 4 runs.

After a successful day one of play, the Washington College softball team lost both of their games on the second day of tournament play. The Shorewomen lost their first game of the day to St. Joseph’s (ME) 9-1, in six innings, and fell to Richard Stockton 6-2 in their second game.

On the third day of play, WC split a pair of games in the tournament. The Shorewomen lost their first game of the day to St. Lawrence 9-1 in five innings, but defeated Hamilton 3-2 in their second game. Washington took the lead in the top of the fifth when Shaelan Nottingham drove in Kylie Nottingham with a single and then scored on a double by Dockrill. Washington scored the go-ahead run when Dockrill drove in Shaelan Nottingham with a two-out single in the top of the seventh. Shaelan Nottingham went 3-for-3, while Dockrill was 3-for-4. Kimme got the win in the circle, allowing two runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits and no walks.

The WC softball team finished out the tournament with a pair of wins on their last day of play. The Shorewomen knocked out 13 hits in a 12-3 six-inning win over Lasell College in their first game of the night. Carbutt finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Snover and Walter each went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Nottingham was 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Glascock went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.

Piasecki picked up the win for the Shorewomen, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks in four innings.

In their second game, WC had 12 hits in a 7-5 win over Saint Mary’s College (IN). Dockrill went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for the Shorewomen in the win, while Walter was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Kylie Nottingham was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Hilary Rosenberg was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Walter got the win in the circle in relief, retiring all five batters she faced in the final inning and two-thirds.

The Shorewomen begin Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a game at Franklin & Marshall College.
