Shoremen lacrosse took a loss to the Dickinson Red Devils this past Saturday. The 10-9 defeat gave them their fifth lose ending with only one goal.

The Shoremen came out strong and confident, playing as a team. In the first-quarter, they held the tempo by scoring four goals on the Red Devils. An assist from sophomore Bennett Cord to junior midfielder Billy Stafford began the Shoremen`s lead. Cord also found the back of the net with the help of sophomore Glenn Tompkins. Freshman attacker Jim Cusick scored off an assist from Stafford, changing the score to 3-0. After a ground ball pickup, Tompkins scored for the Shoremen, ending the first period with a score of 4-0.

The Red Devils did not let down after sophomore Patrick Coyle along with junior midfielder Dave Lundquist both scored in the second-quarter, changing the score to 6-0. By halftime the Shoremen were carrying the game at 6-2.

The third-quarter was a struggle for the Shoremen, having the first three goals scored on them by the Red Devils. In a man-up opportunity, Cusick received a pass from Coyle to push the lead back to only two goals at 7-5.

Starting the fourth-quarter, freshman midfielder Hunter Nowicki netted a goal with only 13:22 remaining to push the lead to 8-5. The Red Devils did not back down, scoring three goals and changing the momentum of the game at 8-8. Lundquist put the Shoremen back in the game after scoring with only 3:55 left. After getting two goals and only 22 seconds to go in the game, the Shoremen were unable to find possession and allowed the Red Devils to come away with the win at 10-9.

Lundquist and Cusick each had two goals for Washington, while Cord, Coyle, and Stafford had a goal along with an assist. Junior goalie Peter Stewart made 12 saves in the loss for the Shoremen. Captains voted Lundquist as being both the offensive and defensive player in Saturday`s game against the Red Devils. Senior captain Doug Herdegen said, “Dave hasn’t played much offense this season and is primarily a defensive midfielder. He ran our transition flawlessly and scored his first two goals of the season, which were two huge goals”.

Lundquist finished the game with one ground ball, and one faceoff. Lundquist, along with Coyle, was the only Shoremen to have a 100 percent shooting percentage against the Red Devils this past Saturday.

With only two games left to play in the Conference, junior captain Billy Stafford stays confident in his teammates as they prepare for their next game.
Stafford said, “We are preparing for Gettysburg like we prepare for every game. We have a big week of practice and we will get back on the field to focus on what we can do to fix our mistakes to pull out a win.”

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 5 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg College.
