Last Saturday afternoon, the Shorewomen played a doubleheader versus Dickinson on Senior Day, where they won both games. The team celebrated two of their special teammates – senior Becca Nicely and junior Leigh Carbutt. The Shorewomen won 4-3 in game one on a game-ending home run by Kylie Nottingham and took game two, 8-7, in nine innings on a walk-off single by sophomore Lindsey Glascock.
In game one in the bottom of the second, Becca Nicely launched her third home run in the last four games over the left field fence to put WC up 1-0.
After a three-run homer by Dickinson in the top of the fifth, WC scored twice to tie it. Freshman Kylie Nottingham hit her first home run of the game to cut the lead to 3-2. WC tied it when junior Sally Snover scored on a throwing error. The Shorewomen entered the bottom of the seventh inning with Notthingham leading off, who drove a pitch over the centerfield fence to give the Shorewomen the 4-3 walk-off victory.
Nottingham was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. In the circle, Kimme got the win and pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two batters. Junior Meaghan Kimme and starting pitcher, junior Jill Piasecki did not allow an earned run.
In game two, WC had four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Nottingham doubled to right-center scoring both freshman Lauren Dockrill and Carbutt. She scored on a base hit by Nicely to left. Snover scored on a single by sophomore Brittany Walter.
Dickinson scored once in the top of the third and four times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, WC scored three times to grab a 7-5 lead. WC tied the game when sophomore Shaelan Nottingham scored on a fielding error. Dockrill scored on a throwing error. Nottingham scored on a single down the right field line by Snover.
Dickinson tied the game in the top of the seventh. But in the bottom of the seventh, Dockrill singled with two outs for her 54th hit of the season to give her the single-season mark for hits by a Shorewoman. She broke the mark of Carbutt, who had 53 hits in 2009. WC had runners on first and second with two outs, but could not score.
In extra innings in the bottom of the ninth, Dockrill doubled to left-center and reached third base on a wild pitch. Glascock drove a single into centerfield for the walk-off hit to score Dockrill and earn WC the win.
In game two, Dockrill was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and set a career-best with five hits for WC. Nicely and Snover had three hits each, with Nicely setting a personal high. Glascock, Shaelan Nottingham, and Kylie Nottingham all had two hits. The 19 hits for Washington is a season-best. In the circle, Kimme got the win in relief and is now 7-5 on the year. She pitched the final five innings, giving up only two runs and three hits.
The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday at home versus McDaniel starting at 3 p.m.
