Last Thursday, the Garnet took down the Shorewomen lacrosse team in a heartbreaking Centennial Conference loss.
WC took a 4-2 lead, which was started off by junior Kali Parrish only 6:53 into the game. Both teams alternated goals during the first half, but WC increased their lead to 6-4 when junior Rachel Bartee scored her third goal just over 10 minutes into the half. Swarthmore answered back with a goal, but sophomore Mollie Shipley scored off of a feed from senior Sarah Cannon making the score 7-5. Shortly after Shipley gave WC their first three-goal lead of the game off of an assist from freshman Carly Eisenbrandt with 8:58 remaining. Swarthmore scored with 5:57 left making the score 8-6 but then right after Shipley scored to maintain WC’s three-goal lead.
The Garnet entered the second half strong, scoring five straight goals. Swarthmore started their comeback scoring just 1:13 into the half. They took their first lead of the game at 16:12 and tallied another at 12:54 making the score 11-9. WC finally had enough and scored two quick goals. Eisenbrandt assisted sophomore Corrine Ziccardi at 6:11 and once more 15 seconds later. Swarthmore scored at 5:04 taking the lead by one until Eisenbrandt tied it up with 59 seconds left in the match. Unfortunately, Swarthmore was able to end the game with a goal off a free-position with only 16.7 seconds left on the clock and the Shorewomen could not manage to score again.
Ziccardi led the Shorewomen with three goals and one assist in the loss. Bartee and Shipley each had three goals and Parrish had two. Eisenbrandt contributed with one goal and three assists for her team.
After this loss the playoffs were questionable for the Shorewomen but luckily Swarthmore lost to Haverford, which meant there was a two-way tie between WC and Dickinson for fifth place. Since the Shorewomen beat Dickinson in the regular season WC got the fifth and final seed of the tournament.
This is the first time since 2003 that the Shorewomen have made the Centennial Conference Tournament. WC will play the fourth seed, Haverford, in the first round of playoffs Wednesday.
