On the days before Homecoming, students may have noticed chalk graffiti popping up around campus. Words advertis¬ing “HOMECOMING 2011” and “GOOSE NATION” peppered the walls of Kirby Stadium and the bricks of the Cater Walk, generating excitement for the weekend’s festivities.
The events of WC’s second annual Homecoming began at 8 p.m. Friday evening with the tailgate party outside the stadium. At the tailgate, WC students enjoyed games of cornhole and water-pong and danced along to the pounding music from the DJ booth.
Students decked out in maroon, black, and white lined up to receive their free WC Homecoming t-shirts. The shirts featured this year’s Homecoming mascot, a ringmaster, who represented the “Circus” theme of the weekend. In addition to the t-shirts, students also received miniature footballs and various other WC memorabilia.
The air was filled with the smell of grilling food as students showed off their barbequing skills in the parking lot, where WC fans lounged in the beds of pickups.
“There were a lot of happy people. Seeing all that school spirit reminded me of why I transferred to this school,” said Junior Rae Ramos.
While WC lacks a football team, it does not lack in school spirit. As nine o’ clock approached, a long line formed outside of the stadium in anticipation of the powderpuff games.
The games consisted of the Women’s Rugby team pitted against the sisters of Alpha Omnicron Pi and the Women’s Basketball team against the Zeta Tau Alpha sisters.
Once inside the stadium, students watched the powderpuff teams warm up and cheered on their favorite girls while holding onto their newly acquired “We Will Flock You” drink holders.
“It was really fun getting ready for the games, making t-shirts and everything, we had a lot of fun getting pumped up,” said sophomore Ellie Hilton, who played for Women’s Rugby.
While waiting for the games to begin, WC fans were entertained by an enthusiastic Gus the Goose.
Gus and his team generated excitement by launching t-shirts into the crowd and starting cheers. Resounding shouts of “Fear the Flock!” urged on the powderpuff teams as the games finally began.
Competition was fierce between the girls, but Women’s Rugby and Women’s Basketball came out on top.
After a Saturday filled with athletic events, WC students were ready to let loose on the dance floor. The Homecoming Dance was held on the Hodson Green, with students dancing the night away in their finest attire.
In the middle of the evening, the Homecoming Court was called up to the DJ booth for the announcement of King and Queen. The week before Homecoming, WC had cast their votes -the nominees for King were Seniors Bert Giannaccini, John Lesser, and Christian Matthews, and the nominees for Queen were Seniors Ryan Adams-Brown, Emily Hordesky, and Amanda Scocco.
After a short moment of anticipation, the King and Queen were finally announced and Christian Matthews and Amanda Scocco took the crowns.
Overall, WC’s second annual Homecoming was a great success, with school spirit and fun abound¬ing. As the years progress, there are high hopes that the weekend will continue to become bigger and better.
