I can still remember the first day, four years ago, when I arrived at Washington College. I went through all of the normal college-drop-off traditions, including climbing the four floors of Minta Martin Hall too many times to count, because most colleges don’t have elevators in their buildings, right?
Once I had been all moved in, taken to lunch, walked around the town, and left by my parents, I was ready to start living college life. But what was there to do? By my parents’ rules I had no car, and while Chestertown may be full of that small town charm, it is a little lacking in stores geared towards college students; or so it seems.
I know you new students are feeling it too. It looked great in the brochures, and of course your first priority is school, and WC was a great choice, but where can I eat? Where can I shop? Where can I go to get the littlest everyday conveniences that make us realize that we should never again take our Target for granted? I am sorry in advance if I am just now making you come to this frightful realization, but don’t fret, because I am here to solve your problems.
While at first glance Chestertown may seem as though all it has to offer is a great education and beautiful views, if you look a little closer, it is full of quaint little shops that could rival a Target any day. Well, you’ll learn to become more inventive with time.
Throughout this column I will be giving you insight on the greatest town to grace the Chester River. With almost four years of college at WC and a summer in Chestertown under my belt, I will be letting you know the best places to shop, eat, and where you can go if you’re just looking to have a good time. Grab the next issue of The Elm, bundle up for the fall weather, and start exploring all of the great places Chestertown has to offer!
Reading The Elm is a great way to start your day; that’s funny, so is breakfast! Next week’s column will be revealing some of the best places to help satisfy that morning hunger. However, since Fall Family Weekend is here, I’m willing to give up a few hints early: Take your parents to Ellen’s (next to Bennett’s gas station) for an amazing breakfast that is fast, affordable, and full of friendly diner folk, or, for something a little more upscale, try the “Bloody Mary Brunch” at the Imperial Hotel downtown.
