I believe it was Tuesday, Sept. 20. I was at work, doing my worker bee thing, when I heard the news.
“Did you know Village Bakery closed?”
I’m sorry, what? The Village Bakery? Closed? When did this happen? Why did this happen? If the Village Bakery can’t make it in this town, what can? What is the meaning behind all of this? What now, I ask of you, is the purpose of life?
So many questions, so little information.
I’m confused as to why there was such an abrupt ending to what I thought to be a booming business. I cannot recall a time I was the only customer in Village Bakery. In fact, the last time I was there, I had to wait in a line just to be seated in the dining area. The place was always packed; the math just doesn’t seem to add up.
And I’m not sure what the owners were thinking, but had I known there was even threat of closing, I like to think I would have marched up there and bought me a case of gluten-free zucchini nut bread. Maybe a lot of people would have. And hey, just a crazy thought: wouldn’t that have provided more business?
If people will rally in support for anything, it’s glazed donuts. I’m sure had the good people of both Washington College and the Chestertown community just been given a little heads up, our cravings for the baked goods of the gods would have been renewed and it wouldn’t have had to come to this.
But alas, it did come to this. And here we are, abandoned. Speechless and confection-less.
I’m hurt. I thought the Village Bakery and I were on a more personal level than this. I guess I’m just upset that I didn’t get one last chance to savor an apple walnut salad.
