The Shorewomen lost 2-1 against #4 nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall on October 22, 2011. Saturday was the team`s “Senior Game,” where they honored their three senior captains, Gussie Reilly, Emily Broomell, and Emily Trees. Their success on the field will undoubtedly carry over with them in their lives after graduation. The 2011 Women`s Field Hockey team would like to honor midfielder Gussie Reilly, defender Emily Broomell, and attaker Emily Trees. Their talent and personalities will be dearly missed by their teammates next year.
Political science major Gussie Reilly plans to travel overseas to Latin America to further her career after graduation. She hopes to be remembered as a leader and as an inspiration to the players on her team while at Washington College. “The past four years playing hockey with Coach Boyle has been a huge part of my life and I couldn’t be more thankful that I have had this experience,” said Reilly. “I could not have asked for a more amazing and dedicated coach, and I wouldn’t trade her for anyone.” Reilly is sad to leave such a talented group of girls, having high expectations for each one. “I expect to see them continue to rise in the conference and country as one of the best teams. The heart that comes from within each player and our team as a whole is not seen in other teams that we play. I hope they continue to play with that heart and passion; from this success will come their way!”
Biology, Pre-Med major Emily Broomell hopes to take the discipline and focus she has gained from playing field hockey, and carry it with her in her career choice. Broomell hopes to attend medical school and become a surgeon in the Navy. She will be missed by many, being a member of Tri-Beta, the honor society for biological sciences, secretary of the Health Occupation Students of America, an Officer in Campus Christian Fellowship, and the President of the Student Athlete Mentors, to name a few. She hopes to leave her legacy as having a hard work ethic on and off the field and giving her 110 percent at all times. “Working hard every day for the past 4 years to get our team to where it is today is an honor,” said Broomell, “I am so proud to be a part of this team and the opportunities the college has given me.” She hopes her teammates continue being the powerhouses that they are and always remember how much they simply love to play the game with one another.
Trees’ speed and personality will surely be missed by many. Gaining a certification in Elementary Education, Emily Trees cannot wait to be a positive role model for young learners. She has spent many hours in the classroom and on the field. The four years she has been at Washington College have been the best four years of her life. “I have made some of the best friends I could ever ask for,” says Trees, “I have developed as a person, player, and peer.” She hopes to be remembered as a quick, enthusiastic, and caring teammate. Her wish is for her teammates to continue with the same work ethic and accomplish everything they put their minds too. “Stay strong and stay hungry!”
The Shorewomen will be playing their last regular game against McDaniel College on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 6 p.m. The outcome of Saturday`s game will determine their standings in the Centennial Conference Tournament.
