Sponsored by the Chestertown Lions Club and The Washington College Student Government Association, this year’s Halloween Parade in Chestertown is a great opportunity to give back to the community. The parade was initially started as a way for groups to come together in the community, and also as a fun Halloween activity for children. The SGA uses their participation in the event as a means of community service and outreach.

Anyone able is encouraged to get involved with this worthwhile event. Many community organizations and Kent County school children participate, so it is a great way to interact with the children in the community, set a positive example, and celebrate Halloween.

This year’s parade will take place on Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. on High Street. Line-up for the parade is in the Dixon Valve parking lot no later than 9:45 a.m. Groups are encouraged to dress up in costume. Last year, aside from the SGA, Alpha Chi Omega sorority dressed up as flamingos and participated in the parade.

“The parade was a great way to get out into the community,” said senior and member of Alpha Chi Omega Kelly Dunbar. “Seeing all the children dressed up in costumes made the event even more enjoyable than expected.”

Clubs that are participating are encouraged to dress up, but it is not a requirement.

This year for the first time, the Lions Club will give an award to the best Washington College entrant based on costumes and participation.

This year’s chair of the parade for the WC SGA involvement is senior SGA Vice President Lindsay Dodd. She is hoping that more members of the WC community will take this opportunity to reach out into the community and have fun doing it
as well.

“The College is an integral part of the Chestertown community and it is important for students to be in the community participating in positive events. This is so important because we want to have a good and sustainable relationship with the town and local people,” she said.

Aside from sponsoring the event and promoting it both on the campus and in the community, the SGA will also have a float in the parade, where senate and executive board members will have the opportunity to be an integral part in the parade itself.

To register your club or organization for the parade, pick up a registration form in the SGA office. Hope to see you all there!
