The Shoremen soccer team recently headed into their last week of soccer for the 2011 season. With games versus Swarthmore and Johns Hopkins on Wednesday and Friday, they hope to end their season with their heads held high.
This past weekend, the Shoremen celebrated the careers of their four seniors: goalkeeper Chris Phipps, defender Colin Kidwell, midfielder Nick Anderson, and forward Jordan Haas. WC played a hard-fought game in their Senior Day game versus Franklin and Marshall on Saturday. The end result was a 1-0 loss as they finished off their last home game of the season. The Shoremen fell to a record of 3-9-2 overall and a record of 1-5-1 in conference play with the loss.
As Franklin and Marshall pulled ahead with a goal in the first half, WC could not find the equalizer. Washington’s final attempt to score came with 42 seconds left in the game, but freshman midfielder Zach Stocksdale could not find the back of the net and had his shot saved by the Diplomat goalkeeper.
Washington senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps made 12 saves in the loss for the Shoremen. Phipps said that, “I wish the seniors’ last home game could have ended in a better result, but we have two more games left in the season to prove ourselves.”
The Shoremen played Wednesday versus Swarthmore and play their final game of the season on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Johns Hopkins.
