The Washington College women’s soccer team came off of two hard losses against conference competitors Ursinus College and Franklin and Marshall College last week.  Both games were tough battles; however, the Shorewomen were unable to secure a victory.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Shorewomen traveled to host Ursinus College for an exciting game under the lights.  The game started out in WC’s hands, as senior Gabby Devaud scored on the first shot of the game off a cross from sophomore Heather Smith.  Shortly after, Ursinus took advantage of a surge and scored four consecutive goals, on their way to a 4-2 win.  Determined to re-enter the game, the Shorewomen fought tirelessly to tack on one final goal.  The goal was scored by freshman attacker Marisa Atkins and marks her first collegiate goal.

The Shorewomen took on Franklin and Marshall at Kirby Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22.  The game resulted in a 1-0 loss for the Shorewomen.

The low-scoring outcome showed how the majority of the game was played defensively.  The first shot on goal didn’t come until 30 minutes into the game.  The Diplomats got the first two shots off, scoring on the second.  That would mark the game’s lone goal.

Although the game resulted in a loss, the most important aspect of the day was to honor the Shorewomen’s seven seniors who have played a crucial role in the development of this team.  Head coach Julika Blankenship reflects on her seniors.  “These seven seniors have played an incredible role in establishing a tradition. Since their arrival on campus they have made many changes in commitment level and dedication and have been able to bring each class along with them.  They will leave knowing that they are responsible for changing the face of the program.”
