Washington College plus Dr. Rebecca Jayne equals a new assistant professor of mathematics.
The community warmly welcomes the new professor on campus as she settles into her first semester.
Jayne, born and raised in Queen Anne’s County, Md., now returns to the area for her occupation. She completed her undergraduate schooling at McDaniel College, and received her masters and Ph.D. at North Carolina State University.
“After going to a small liberal arts college for my undergraduate work and then attending a huge state school for my graduate work, I knew I wanted to teach at a small liberal arts college,” she said.
Although new on campus, her love for mathematics has been long-term. Now she’s here to share her interest and skill with the WC students.
“Math was always my favorite subject in school,” Dr. Jayne said. “I always liked solving problems and liked all the rules there were to follow in solving a math problem. Once I got to high school and college and found out about the more advanced mathematics, I really enjoyed the moment of clarity after solving a difficult problem.”
Drawn back to Maryland, Jayne is confident in her decision.
“I was already familiar with Washington College and knew I would like working here,” she said.
Although previously acquainted with the territory, Dr. Jayne is still adjusting to her new home here in Chestertown.
“I love seeing the river everyday and I’m discovering that the town has a lot to offer.”
Outside of the classroom, Jayne spends the majority of her time reading and traveling. She’s already visited China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Hungary, and Mexico.
