The C-Town Scoop: Getting Your Fitness On

These days we’re all looking for a good way to stay in shape. As we all know, this is a little easier said than done. I’m sure I am not the only one who always has “getting in shape” as one of their New Year’s Resolutions. Unless you play a sport on campus or are one of those lucky ones that can always will yourself to go to the gym, you know how hard it can be to find the will or the time to make yourself workout.

I’m sure that my column thus far has also not been helping much in terms of fitness goals since I have literally had everyone eating their way through the entirety of C-town. Don’t worry, though, because once again, I am here to save the day. There are plenty of places in or around C-town that can offer you a great workout; better yet there are even some options that are so fun, you’ll want to do it all the time!

Where’s a better place to start than our very own gym? For those of you who are still not sure where the Washington College gym is located, you need more help than I thought.

Our gym, the Benjamin Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center, has some great options available to help you find a way to get in shape that personally fits. One of the options is meeting with one of the trainers who can help you to figure out a good workout that perfectly fits your goals. They will help you form a series of workouts that you feel comfortable with.

Still not feeling like the gym is the place for you? The Lifetime Fitness center also offers a plethora of athletic classes; some are even available for credit! There are classes such as Aerobics, Spinning, Power Hour, Yoga, Pilates, Dance, and many more. There are even classes in the pool such as Scuba. Try one of the classes out. If you don’t like it, move on to the next one.

Looking for something that the school doesn’t offer? Head into C-town. There are a few places that offer classes. Some may cost money, but many of them offer a student discount, and the classes are worth the few extra bucks.

The Kent Athletic Center is one such facility. It is located on High Street next to the Chestertown Cemetery and behind Dixon Valve. The classes are normally $8 – $10, but with the student discount, you only pay half of that!

One of the amazing classes they offer is Zumba on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. The class is a mix of different styles of workout and dance moves and is done to workout-tempo remixes of today’s most popular songs. Don’t let the fun music fool you; this class is a great workout. You do not have to feel pressured during the class either; everything can be done at your own level of capability.

Another place in town that offers a great workout is Phoenix Personal Fitness. As you drive north on Rt. 213, it is located near the outskirts of town right in front of the Pizza Hut. They offer classes such as Bootcamp. This class is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6 – 7 a.m. and the walk-in price is $10. I know this class is early and maybe a little expensive for those of us on a college budget, but it is a great workout. All movements are scalable so no one is excluded. Bring a friend and have a great time having your butt kicked into shape.

AquaFit is another great place to go if you are looking for a fun class to motivate you towards getting in shape. AquaFit is located in the new Brian E. Bainbridge building, also located on High Street next to Kent Crossing Apartments. Their classes also cost money to those who are not members, but they have some especially fun water aerobic workouts that our school does not offer. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 5:30 a.m. -8:30 p.m., Fridays 5:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. They have ab classes, interval training classes, cardio, Kickboxing, Power Yoga and many more.

A great thing about these classes is that if you cannot make the time the class is offered on campus, one of the other locations in town may offer the class at another time.

If you just can’t fathom stepping foot in a gym then go for a run around town.  Run down to the river or try out the 5K course, which begins and ends conveniently at Wilmer Park located just past the Chestertown Police department and down near the boathouse. With the holidays on their way these options may be a great way to keep you feeling just a little bit healthier, but will also offer a great time for you and your friends.
