On March 30, 1975, Ron Lalonde earned the first hat trick in Washington Capitals history in an 8-5 loss to the Detroit Red Wings at the Capital Centre.

On April 1, 1978 New York Islander Mike Bossy became the first Islander and first rookie in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season. He broke this record in a 3-2 win against the Washington Capitals.

Phil Jackson, who led the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to a record nine NBA titles, was among the newest members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2007 on April 2, 2007.

On April 6, 1975, Stan Gilbertson becomes the first Washington Capital to score four goals in a game making Washington victorious over their rival the Pittsburgh Penguins. The final score of that regular season finale was 8-4.

On April 6, 1983, the Washington Caps played the first Stanley Cup playoff game in franchise history. This game ended in a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders. Bobby Gould scored Washington’s first ever playoff goal that day.
