After a few internal changes that occurred a few weeks ago that resulted in a devastating 9-0 loss to Swarthmore College, there are new faces to the Women’s Tennis line-up. With the absences of key sophomore players Amanda Bercovici and Bethany Daller come the new faces of seniors Meghan Tait, of WC basketball fame, and Gabie Batista, who played as a freshman.
The two new women showed their abilities as the Women’s team defeated Bryn Mawr last week, on April 2, in a final score of 5-4. Senior and captain, Jordan Finnegan and Batista defeated their opponents in an 8-4 final score at No.1 doubles. Juniors Kat Cohen and Campbell McNicol defeated their opponents in a matching score of 8-4 at No.2.
In singles, the girls won half their matches as Finnegan won at No. 1 with 6-2 and 6-3 scores. McNicol also won at No. 2 with scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Cohen’s match was the true nail biter of the day as she was forced to a third match. After a 6-4 win over her opponent, she fell 4-6 in the second game, but managed a 6-2 victory in the third match, thus clinching the whole game.
Unfortunately, the women were shut out by John Hopkins, who are ranked fourth in the region and eighth in the nation for division three.
The women still have a remarkable record of 5-2 in the conference and 9-3 overall. It will be interesting to see how they continue on for the rest of the season.
As this article is being written, they are competing against Haverford, and this Friday they will be at Muhlenburg and then Gettysburg on Saturday.
