As the old addage goes, “you win some, you lose some.” Washington College Volleyball found that out at the Battlefield Classic, at tournament held at Gettysburg College last weekend.
The first day of the tournament was not ideal. The Shorewomen just could not get going and lost both matches of the day to Messiah and Gallaudet, both by a score of 3-0. Senior middle-hitter Jenny Lee was the brightest spot in the losses. She totaled 14 kills over the two games. Freshman Kristen Lee tallied 22 digs in the two games as well, a clean 11 each game.
The second day of the Battlefield brought a reversal of fortunes for the Shorewomen. It was time for them to win some, as they picked up a pair of wins against Cedar Crest and Penn State Harrisburg with scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. Kristen Lee was once again stellar. She picked up 11 kills in the first win against Cedar Crest and eight against Penn State Harrisburg , leading the team in each game. Jenny Lee played an all-round game in the first win of the day. She had a hand in 10 points against Cedar Crest with five kills, three aces and two assisted blocks.
The second match of the day against Penn State Harrisburg was a particularly dominating effort by the Shorewomen. They won the games easily, with scores of 25-8. 25-14 and 25-10. Sophomore Kate Liccione served a career-best eight aces in the win and added a team-leading 12 digs. Junior setter Lauren White added 33 assists and the Shorewomen cruised along to even their record at 2-2.
The Shorewomen went on a three-match winning streak after last year’s Battlefield Classic and went on to post a solid 16-12 record in 2011. Hopefully this years performance in Gettysburg can propel them to success once again.
