  • On Sept. 13, 1998 Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs hit his 61st and 62nd home runs of the 1998 season. His 61st homer tied Roger Maris’s single season home run record, but Sosa broke Maris’s record in that same game when he hit number 62. The Cubs ended up defeating Milwaukee 11-10 after 10 innings. The following year on Sept. 18, 1999 Sammy Sosa became the first player in Major League history to reach the 60 home run mark in back-to-back seasons.
  • On Sept. 14, 2008 The Ravens’ bye week was unexpectedly moved to Week 2 after Hurricane Ike ravaged Texas’ Gulf Coast area and forced the postponement of Baltimore’s game at Houston until Week 10. Due to this schedule change, Baltimore would play 18 consecutive games, including three in the playoffs, before the season concluded.
  • On Sept. 15, 1902 the first recorded double play in MLB history took place. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance of the Chicago Cubs were the three players who pulled off the play. During that game the Cubs got the victory in a 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
  • September 1921 was the first year that the New York Yankees clinched their first AL pennant. They have gone on to win 40 total pennants in their storied history.
  • In September 2003 the Baltimore Ravens opened the season on the road at Pittsburgh and lost to their division rivals, 34-15. Rookie QB Kyle Boller started his first game as a professional. The following week the Ravens bounced back and defeated the Cleveland Browns 33-13 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. In that home opener, Running Back Jamal Lewis broke an NFL record with 295 yards rushing yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns.
