- Baseball playoffs start in about a month and the Baltimore Orioles are currently tied for first place with the New York Yankees in the East Division of the American League. Baltimore has not been in the playoffs since 1997. In that year they lost to the Cleveland Indians 4 games to 2 after defeating the Seattle Mariners 3 games to 1.
- On Sept. 6, 1995 Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke Lou Gehrig’s Major League record of 2,130 consecutive games played. The Orioles were playing against the California Angles. Ripken’s streak began on May 30, 1982 and his record of 2,131 consecutive games is still standing in Major League Baseball today.
- On Sept. 11, 2009 another one of Lou Gehrig’s records was broken, this time by a New York Yankee. Derek Jeter broke Lou Gehrig’s all-time franchise mark of 2,721 hits with a single off Baltimore Oriole Chris Tillman at Yankee Stadium. Gehrig set this record on Sept. 6, 1937.
- On Sept. 10, 1969 the New York Mets reached first place for the first time in franchise history. In order for this to happen the Mets were depending on a loss from the Cubs, which happened, and they needed to beat the Montreal Expos. All of these factors worked out in the Mets’ favor and they finished first.
- On Sept.15, 1963 Jesus, Matty, and Felipe Alou made up the first all-brother outfield in Major League history. The brothers played for the San Francisco Giants.
