Sept. 11, 2012 marked the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City. Eleven years older, 11 years in a world forever changed by what happened that day. It is the Pearl Harbour of our generation. We all remember where we were the exact moment we heard the news. For most of us, we were in our elementary school classrooms, completely unaware of the full implications of what was happening to our nation.

As the years have passed, we have grown into young adults who better understand the world around us, what happened that day and all that was lost. All across the United States, people gather together on Sept. 11 to forget what divides and remember unites us.

With flag at half-mast, the victory bell rang at at 8:46 a.m. to observe when the North Tower was hit and Washington College students and faculty came together to observe Patriot Day. That evening a ceremony in Decker Theater was held for the WC community. Members from various campus faith organizations gave readings and Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Robert Mooney read a poem commemorating the last words of heroes on the planes and in the towers.

WACappella sang “Mad World” and “When You Believe” in rememberance of Sept.11. Speakers included: senior Nora Burns, junior Assem Abd El Khalik reading from the Qur’an, senior Courtnee Doll reading a passage from the Bible, senior Aubrey Hastings reading a passage from the Bible, with President Mitchell Reiss offerring opening remarks.
