Dear Editor,
As a former editor of The Elm, I am taking this opportunity, before the end of the academic year, to commend all of the staff of the campus newspaper for their excellent work.
The campus newspaper remains a most important component of any college campus. It is another way with which students can experiment with good writing and thoughtful editorials and opinions. My experience as editor of The Elm has lasted me over 50 years.
This year, the paper has had snappy headlines, thoughtful opinion pieces and well reported news stories. The sports news was well presented and keeps readers up to date on the athletic endeavors of the Washington College sports teams.
Print newspapers in America may be in decline. However, there remains the tactile desire to flip the pages to see what journalistic gem is waiting on the other side of the page. I note with interest, that the WC Elm is very well read, both on and off campus. Distributing the paper throughout Chestertown is a wonderful and informative way to keep the entire WC community informed.
To the seniors on The Elm staff I say, never lose your curiosity, enjoy continuing writing, and maintain your interest in the virtues of the written page and the information and wisdom these pages impart.
When the 2013 staff of The Elm reach the occasion of their 50th class reunion at Washington College, as I will next month, let us hope that a copy of The Elm will still be found on the campus.
Signed,
Fletcher R. Hall ‘63
