The Washington College men’s and women’s tennis teams both have built successful campaigns so far this season, with the Shoremen posting a 10-4 overall record, 4-3 in the Centennial Conference, and the Shorewomen posting an 12-2 overall record and a 7-1 record in the CC. Both teams are working hard to make a deep run into the Centennial Conference Tournament.
The Shoremen started their season with six straight wins but began to lose some of their momentum after losing two straight matches in CC matchups against Franklin & Marshall and Haverford. The Shorewomen also started their season on a high note, winning their first nine matches, four against Centennial opponents. In their most recent matches, both teams faced off against Muhlenberg at home on Friday in a CC matchup.
The Shoremen got their first point of the match from sophomore Zachary Novick and freshman Justin Panepinto. Senior Ryan Holtschneider, sophomore Jeremy Novick, senior Dan Boate, and senior Vishnu Rajes also contributed with points for the Shoremen, who went on to win the match 7-2. For the Shorewomen, junior Blair Kang and freshman Rachel Martinez got the team on the board first with an 8-1 doubles match win. Juniors Marielle McIntyre and April Weaver got the Shorewomen their second point of the match with a second 8-1 win. Freshmen Krista Filiopoulos and Julie Lazar completed the doubles sweep over the Mules to help the Shorewomen win the match 8-1.
The victory against the Mules and Dickinson College’s loss to Ursinus earned the Shorewomen a guaranteed spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament beginning April 29.
Following the matches against the Mules, the men and women traveled to Gettysburg, Pa. for a pair of matches against conference rival Gettysburg. WC, riding the momentum of their victories against Muhlenberg the day before, flew past the Bullets. The Shoremen won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory. The Shorewomen gave up only four games total to the Bullets as they earned the comfortable 8-1 victory.
The Shoremen return to action on April 22 as they face conference rival Swarthmore before their regular season wraps up at home against Johns Hopkins. The Shorewomen look to extend their winning streak as they visit Bryn Mawr on April 21 and host McDaniel on April 23.
