In an exhibition game Wednesday Nov. 9, the Shorewomen basketball team hosted University of Wilmington Wildcats in a highly competitive game.
The Wildcats had the lead, until the Shorewomen took control back between the third and forth quarters. The Wildcats would not let the game end with a Shorewomen comeback. The Shorewomen lost at the last second 59-57. The Wildcats scored the game winning basket after a timeout with 19 seconds left to play.
“Ultimately, the goal is to finish in top five of the conference so we can be eligible for the conference tournament. I was really proud of our girls tonight. We keep focusing on getter better everyday and today we got better. What I’m most proud of is the effort we put forth tonight. Everyone played hard and we put ourselves in a position to win. Unfortunately, we didn’t but we can build on this and get ready for Hood next week”, said Head Coach Alisha Mosley about the game and the season coming up.
At the end of the first quarter, the game remained tied at 12-12. The Wildcats started to run away with it in the second quarter The second half picked up when the Wildcards began a full-court press on defense every time they scored a basketball or turned the ball over. The Shorewomen were able to maintain their composure on offense even through the press.
“It was very exciting playing in my first collegiate basketball game against Wilmington University. They were a very athletic team and we all gave a lot of heart and left everything out on the floor. Going into the game nerves were definitely a factor, but after I got into the flow of the game I started to produce more. We all played hard and together as a team. And it was really fun to be a part of. My personal goals for this season include averaging a double, double. And as a team I would love to increase our conference wins, and make the centennial conference play offs”, said freshman forward Cassidy Quattro.
The Shorewomen will take a weekend trip to Pennsylvania to face Wilkes College and either Susquehanna or Valley Forge the next day in the Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament. The weekend of games will begin on Nov. 19.
