The Shoremen hosted their last two conference home games of the season last week with contests against McDaniel and Franklin & Marshall. The Shoremen were able to split these games by first knocking off McDaniel 49-44, and then losing to the Diplomats on Senior Day 74-63.
In the Shoremen’s win versus McDaniel the team overcame a slow start after falling behind early 21-5. The team’s focus was on ramping up the defense to ignite the comeback in front of the home fans.
“We really stepped up our defense, and shots started to fall for us. We were getting good shots earlier and they just weren’t going in, but when they finally did we started mounting our comeback,” said senior James Drury.
The Shoremen were able to trim the deficit, and trail by just five points at halftime, 25-20. At the half, Coach Goodman solidified the message to his team to execute on defense to complete the comeback and secure the win.

“We were hoping to be able to change defenses between zone and man with pressure. They’re a very good ball screen offense and offensive rebounding team. We thought if we execute defensively and rebound with energy and focus it would give us a chance,” he said.
In the second half, the Shoremen held McDaniel to just 19 points.
“I think we just played very hard, and made it a point to keep people in front of us on defense,” said senior Bryan Shapiro.
Before hosting the Diplomats on Saturday afternoon, Coach Goodman and his staff honored the two seniors on the team for all they have achieved, both on and off the court and behind the scenes for the program.
“Our seniors, James Drury and Bryan Shapiro have been tremendous representatives of our program. They have embraced their roles and have shown necessary leadership in helping to lay a great foundation for the future of our program. I’m very happy to have coached them for two years. … All of our seniors will be greatly missed and left a lasting positive impact on our program and campus community,” Coach Goodman said.
He also honored Senior Student Assistant Coach Austin Murphy and Head Team Manager Samantha Goldrich. “Austin … has been a dedicated and loyal addition to our staff over the past two years and has grown as a coach and leader,” he said. “Samantha has been our head team manager for her entire four years. She does all of the behind-the-scenes operations that makes our program flow smoothly and organizes the team manager staff.”
Drury logged a team-high of 30 minutes in his start and scored 21 points in the losing effort versus the Diplomats on Senior Day.
“Spending time and working out with my teammates is what I’ll miss the most about Washington College basketball. I just want to win as many games as possible the rest of our season, and play as well as I am capable of playing,” said Drury.
Shapiro also got the start and finished with three points in 11 minutes of play.
“I will probably miss just being around the team the most. I will also miss just playing basketball because I have been playing my whole life and this is the last time it will be very competitive. My best memory would probably be when I scored 18 points my freshman year against Williams College. They ended up going to the national championship that year so it was pretty awesome to have my best game against them,” said Shapiro.
The Shoremen’s seniors helped lead their young team this season, and laid a positive foundation for the future of the program.
