At the Humane Society of Kent County, there are two regulars who go by the name JP. One, JP Hooker, is a kennel technician who also helps with the volunteers from Washington College’s Animal Impact club. The other is JP the cat, who is this issue’s adoptable Pet of the Week.
JP is about one-and-a-half years old, and he has gray fur and bright green eyes. Not much is known about JP’s previous owner, because like many other cats at the Humane Society, he was left in the drop room.
“When he first got here, he was scared to death,” Hooker said. “He didn’t want anything to do with people and he didn’t want anything to do with other cats. Literally, he would just hide in his bed in the corner of his cage, and we felt bad, so we’d cover him with a blanket so he felt more secure.”
Luckily, JP soon overcame his fear of socialization, and is now one of the friendliest cats at the Humane Society.
“He’s completely different now. He’s a lot more social with people and cats. He doesn’t even mind being dressed up,” Hooker said. JP also enjoys cuddling with anyone who approaches him.

“He’s a great cat. He loves people now. He loves the attention.”
JP is currently able to share his cage with another cat, which further proves his remarkable progress.
JP is popular among WC students who visit the Humane Society. “There were WC students here earlier today and they were all over JP. He was loving every bit of it,” Hooker said.
JP does well with other cats and people of all ages. He would also likely be dog-friendly. JP would be the perfect cat for someone looking for a lot of cuddles.
“Hopefully someone will come in and fall in love with JP because he’s amazing. He’s such a cool cat. He’s one of the staff favorites, too,” Hooker said.
If anyone in the Chestertown community, WC faculty and staff members, or even students with families are interested in rescuing JP the cat, please contact the Humane Society of Kent County at 410-778-3648 or by emailing info@kenthumane.org
