Dewey is just one the many names this 3-year-old pitt bull mix, available at the Humane Society of Kent County, answers to.
“Dewey has a lot of nicknames,” Kennel Technician JP Hooker said. “We call him Dewey-doo-wop, or dew-drop.”
Interestingly enough, Dewey started life as a shelter puppy.
“His mom was a shelter dog. She was pregnant with puppies. Somebody fostered her and the puppies, so he was born an adoptable puppy,” Hooker said. “One of the volunteers actually has a picture of the puppies when they were all here and you can see Dewey. He stands out because they all looked so different from each other.”
Of course, as a puppy, Dewey was quickly adopted.
“He went home with one of his siblings and I guess as they got older they got into sibling rivalry. They didn’t get along that well. So they surrendered Dewey because he and his sibling just kept getting into altercations,” he said.
The staff thinks that Dewey and his sibling didn’t get along because the dogs were not properly socialized with each other.
“He’d probably be best with him being the only dog in the home just because I think he likes the attention. He doesn’t really show aggression, but I don’t think he was socialized too well with his sibling,” Hooker said.
Although Dewey would prefer to be the only dog in the household, he does great with other humans. “He loves people. He loves to play,” Hooker said. “He loves toys and he’s really good at fetch. He’s good at dropping toys when he brings them back to you.”
Dewey also enjoys is swimming.
“He loves the water. He goes in the pools that we have and sticks his head under the water. It’s cute,” he said
Dewey is very energetic, so he would be best with someone able to handle his strength and high energy.
“Someone was in here the other day who was interested in Dewey, but they were concerned because they had nieces and nephews that Dewey could be too high energy for,” he said.
Although Dewey is high energy, he is also full of love.
“He’s really strong, but he’s also really smart,” Hooker said.
Some of the commands that Dewey knows include sit, paw, and down.
“He knows down really well. If he’s in the kennel and he’s jumping all over, I can just say down and he listens,” he said.
Because Dewey is still young and has trained well thus far, he would likely do well training with his future owner.
“He’s very treat motivated. He loves treats,” he said.
The HSKC staff is hoping that Dewey finds his forever home soon.
“He’s a great looking dog,” Hooker said. “There’s definitely someone out there who wants a dog like Dewey to play with.”
