The staff at the Humane Society of Kent County nicknamed Hope, a 6-year-old cat available for adoption, “the nanny,” as soon as they met her.

“When Hope came in she was left in our drop room. It was her, another cat, and five kittens,” Animal Care Technician Mary Johnston said.

Although the kittens belonged to the other adult cat, they might as well have belonged to Hope, too.

“The kittens were only like 5 weeks old but she was like their nanny. She would help take care of them. She watched over the kittens and watched them and helped clean them. She cuddled with them. We called her the nanny,” she said.

Of course, the kittens had to be placed into foster care until they were of adoptable age.

“We hated it when we had to separate Hope from the kittens and their mom, because the kittens needed to go into foster care, which they’re still in. But she was amazing with them,” Johnston said. “She would get up on the bed and the kittens could lay there with her too.”

According to Johnston, Hope would share her meal with one kitten, who “would come up underneath of her and Hope would just wait to eat until the kitten was done,” she said.

Hope and the kittens arrived at the Humane Society at the end of August. A month later, Hope is still awaiting her forever home.

“As you can see, she’s super friendly,” she said. “She loves to be groomed and lay in the sun.”

Hope is OK with other cats but she loves attention so she would do better in a house where she can get as much love as possible. She would likely do well with dogs, but she has never been introduced to them.

Obviously, Hope does well with people of all ages.

“She’s amazing,” Johnston said.
