The children of Chestertown can find their share of tricks and treats at the President’s house, the Hynson-Ringgold House, on Halloween night.

Alicia Boyd and Carol Landis, campus event coordinators, and Gina Ralston, director of campus events, together with the Student Government Association, have planned an evening open house at Hynson-Ringgold on Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“We will have the Hynson-Ringgold House open for any children who want to stop by to trick-or-treat. The…students from the SGA will be there to help greet and hand out candy to families, and it should be a lot of fun,” Ralston said.

Hynson-Ringgold was open for Halloween night last year, and it was “a huge success,” Ralston said. “We had a bunch of students who were involved with decorating last year, and it was so much fun that we decided to do it again this year, [so] we reached out to the SGA, and we have a bunch of students that are going to help decorate.”

President Kurt Landgraf requested that the house be opened for Halloween this year, but due to a scheduling conflict, he will not attend the event.

On Oct. 26, SGA students decorated the house for Halloween, and on Halloween night, they will dress up in costumes and help hand out candy to the children in town.

“It’s not exactly a haunted house, it’s just a decorated old house that just looks haunted,” said Ralston. “[Children] can come in, and we have candy and some little toys, and pencils, and fun things out for them to pick as their trick-or-treat goodies, and then they move on.”

The event will also have hot beverages like hot chocolate and hot cider for both children and adults in attendance.

In speaking with his office, Landgraf insisted on the event’s recurrence because of its impact on the town, and sophomore Emilie Sanborn, SGA secretary of social life, agreed.

“This event is a great opportunity for Washington College to show our involvement with and commitment to the community of Chestertown,” she said.

Ralston and Landis expressed their excitement for the event as well.

“We want to do something really nice to collaborate with the SGA to put on something nice for the town. And it’s a lot of fun, and we’re excited. Our whole office will be there,” Ralston said.
