Pet of the Week: Bella

Meet Bella, an adoptable dog at the Humane Society of Kent County who is about 4 years old.

“Bella is a German shepherd mix, but we aren’t really sure what she’s mixed with,” said Kennel Technician JP Hooker. “She almost looks like a fox because she has shepherd features, but she’s a lot smaller.”

Although Bella may look like a fox, she certainly does not have the conniving demeanor of one.

“Bella is very sweet. We actually gave her a full name, Bella Herrera, because it just fit her,” he said.

Bella has come a long way from when she first arrived at the Humane Society.

According to Hooker, Bella’s previous owner surrendered her to the shelter, along with her sister.

When Bella arrived, she was scared of all the unfamiliar people and animals.

“She used to be really shy and timid around new people, but she’s getting a lot better. We used to need to use treats to get her to approach new people at meet-and-greets, but now she seems to approach them,” he said.

Not only has Bella become more social, but she has become more playful. The shelter regularly brings Bella to events such as visiting a center for the elderly, because the staff knows that Bella can brighten anyone’s day.

He said, “She doesn’t mind being dressed up. We dressed her up for Cinco De Mayo. We’ve also put sunglasses on her and stuff. She’s really good with it.”

Bella does well with some dogs, but, because of her timid nature, she should be introduced to other dogs in the household before being adopted. She would likely not mind cats, and she would do amazing with any type of person.

“She’s really just a beautiful dog. She’s come a long way and I think she’s just waiting for someone to come in and fall in love with her,” he said.

If anyone in the Chestertown community, WC faculty and staff members, or even students with families are interested in rescuing the beautiful Bella, please contact the Humane Society at 410-778-3648 or by emailing info@kenthumane.org.
