Pet of the Week: Nemo

Despite his name, there is nothing fishy about Nemo’s character. He is a 7-year-old black lab mix who is available for adoption at the Humane Society of Kent County.

“Nemo seems to love attention,” said Kennel Technician Rose Douglas. “He seems a little aloof at first, but once he bonds with a person, he looks forward to spending time with them and giving them kisses.”

Nemo’s shyness is partially due to his unease in a shelter. Although Nemo had an established life with his previous owner, he had to leave through no fault of his own.

Douglas said that Nemo’s anxiety at the shelter will dissipate once he has settled into a home environment again.

“It’s pretty sad that he spent his whole life with one family and is now just another dog in the shelter being overlooked day after day,” she said.

Although Nemo is not a fan of being in a shelter, he is making the most of his time there. The staff is hopeful that Nemo’s cute personality will help him find a home soon.

“Nemo loves to go for walks either on a leash or exploring the play yard on his own. He’s very observant and little bit nosy. Nemo loves to people watch and dog watch to figure out what everyone’s doing,” she said.

In addition to being an explorer, Nemo enjoys attention from people.

“Nemo also likes to lean into people while they’re petting him, which is very typical of labs,” she said.

Nemo would prefer to be the only pet in the household because he has not been socialized to other animals. However, he would do great with people of all ages.

Nemo may be 7 years old, but his playful soul shows that he has much more love to give to his future owners. Nemo also qualifies for a reduced adoption fee because he is a senior pet.

If anyone in the Chestertown community, WC faculty and staff members, or even students with families are would like to help Nemo find his way to a forever home, please contact the Humane Society of Kent County at 410-778-3648 or by emailing
