Field Hockey:
Field hockey hosted Roanoke on Oct. 21 for a non-conference game as the Shorewomen celebrated Senior Day. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Domanico made nine saves in the Washington College 3-1 victory.
WC seniors Katie Arnold, Sami Bialozynski, Michaela Conners, Courtney Rainey, and Liza Slavin were all honored before the game for their achievements during their collegiate careers. All five got to start the game.
WC got on the board first thanks to freshman Kailyn Brandt’s goal roughly a quarter through the game. Her initial shot was saved, but a rebound came right back to her stick. She blasted the ball into the back of the net to give WC a lead they would never relinquish.
Each team was able to score a goal courtesy of a penalty stroke. Freshman Megan Ritchey increased WC’s lead to 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Roanoke notched their only goal of the game with just 17 seconds remaining until halftime.
In the second half, WC was able to solidify their win with 3-1 as Brandt scored her second goal of the game with just under 15 minutes left to play.
Next for the Shorewomen is a conference match at Muhlenberg on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. followed by the first round of NCAA Playoffs.
Soccer:
The WC men’s soccer team celebrated its four seniors, Skyler Clark, Debashish Groenka, Chris Gingrich, and Mike Holowesko) prior to start of their game vs. Franklin and Marshall. Ranked No. 2 in the Centennial Conference, the Diplomats controlled the game winning 5-0.
The Diplomats scored within the first 10 minutes of the game against freshman goalkeeper Gavin Campbell off a penalty kick. With 20 minutes left in the first half, sophomore Griffin Bull took a shot close to the goal, but it was saved by the Diplomat goalkeeper. The Diplomats scored again off a give-and- go header. The Diplomats charged forward, scoring once more with just 1.8 seconds left in the first half.
The Shoremen continued to fight off the Diplomats with a shot coming from sophomore Evan Savoth in the second half. The shot was slightly too high, grazing the crossbar.
Franklin and Marshall managed another goal at 17:42 with a cross and a shot. With a score of 4-0, the Shoremen rotated through a majority of the lineup to try to find the right match.
Franklin and Marshall’s fifth and final goal came from a corner kick. Campbell managed six saves throughout the game.
Holowesko earned the title of Goose nation TV Player of the Game for his performance in the backfield.
Next for the Shoremen will be a match against Muhlenberg for their final conference game on Saturday, Oct. 28. The game will be played at Muhlenberg at 7 p.m.
Volleyball:
The Shorewomen hosted Elizabethtown College and Hood College on Oct. 21 in a tri-match. The Shorewomen played Hood second, celebrating their seniors before the match. Seniors Sarah Bentley, Alaina Geissberger, Taylor Horan, Amy Rohn, and Emily Houck were recognized.
The Shorewomen began the first set strong, creating a 10-2 lead against the Blazers. Hood was able to tie the score at 15-15. WC was able to create momentum and lead the set, winning 21-25. Horan won the set with two aces.
WC was then able to clinch the second set as they took a 7-2 lead over the Blazers. Bentley made a kill, securing the win of the second set.
The third set stayed in WC’s control until the last few points when the Blazers were able to win by four.
In the fourth and final set, WC and Hood were tied at 6-6. The Shorewomen’s lead increased to 11-6 thanks to Bentley with a finalizing ace. The Shorewomen won the last set from a Hood attacking error at 25-15.
The Shorewomen went 1-1 in the day, losing to Elizabethtown 3-2 and winning against Hood 3-1.
Horan capitalized on her senior day, earning her 1000th career dig. She is the ninth Shorewoman to do so. Horan had an outstanding 56-assist performance, 59 assists short of matching WC’s record made in 2010. Geissberger also made an impression, winning the Goose Nation TV Shorewomen Player of the Match vs. Hood.
The Shorewomen host Urisnus on Oct. 25 in their final home conference match.
