Around Washington College, sophomore Austin Allen is known as the defensive specialist. In this year’s offseason, Allen is preparing to have a big impact on and off the court for the program. Last year, Allen averaged 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals while making 23 starts in 24 games.

“My individual goals for this upcoming season are to make Shoreman of the Week at least twice, be top five in the conference in steals, and definitely help my team reach the conference tournament,” Allen said.

He may be well on his way, because Head Coach Aaron said that Allen is the team’s best defensive player.

“He has great anticipation with quick hands and feet.  He has really improved his offensive game and I expect that he will grow his role on both ends of the floor,” he said.

“He’s a tenacious defender and takes great pride in guarding the opposing team’s best player. This year we look for him to continue that role, as well as expanding his role offensively,” Assistant Coach Alex Bates said.

So far Allen has had a positive experience as a member of the basketball team.

“My favorite memory with the basketball team so far was our trip to Florida last winter break. We took a trip to Ft. Lauderdale and competed against national D3 teams. This was a cool experience on and off the court because we definitely got better as a team and got closer,” Allen said.

The coaches say he brings selflessness and positivity to the court.

“Austin is an incredible kid. He brightens up the gym everyday with his infectious happy attitude and his amazing personality,” Bates said.

Goodman echoed Bates’s sentiments. “Austin is probably our most outgoing player.”

He said that Allen does well in the classroom and is career driven as shown by his participation in the Center for Career Development’s program Targeted Career Awareness Program. Goodman said this will prepare him for opportunities after graduation.

As a sophomore, Allen already has plans for after college that include his passion for basketball.

“Staying close to the game is important to me and ESPN would be a great job for me after college,” Allen said.

While he is still at WC, the coaches have a plan for his role on the court.

“He’s a tenacious defender and takes great pride in guarding the opposing team’s best player. This year we look for him to continue that role, as well as expanding his role offensively,” Bates said.
