Just a Gander; Do Soulmates Exist?

As Julie Dillon once said, “Our universe grants every soul a twin—a reflection of themselves—the kindred spirit. And no matter where they are or how far away they are from each other—even if they are in different dimensions, they will always find one another. This is destiny; this is love.”

Dillon’s quote describes the long-sought-after soulmate, the person in which a great deal of people believes and for whom they spend their lives waiting. Is there truly such thing as a soulmate, a perfect person with whom you are destined to be?

I believe that throughout life, one has many soulmates. A soulmate is a person who challenges you, who offers you knew ways of thinking and viewing the world that, in some way, change you. A soulmate, then, by definition, is different than a life partner, who is a person who is able to support and respect you and to help you through life. They may challenge you in similar ways, but not on as deep of a level as soulmates.

Every person that you encounter throughout your life has a purpose—whether to change you, to comfort you, to teach you, etc. Soulmates can do all of these things because they provide you with a deep spiritual connection, one which you feel as if you have had for a long time, even if you have just met them. You have an understanding with one another, and your connection is intense, but not necessarily sexual.

A life partner, on the other hand, is someone to whom you are physically attracted, someone who shares your values and the details about their person are new and exciting. A life partner gives you stability, whereas a soulmate is wild and full of extremes.

Both life partners and soulmates are necessary for one to grow during their lifetime. Neither is better nor worse than the other, as some people tend to lean more towards one type of person over the other, or believe they are the same person entirely. In my opinion, a soulmate can also be a life partner, but throughout my experience they have been different.

Instead of searching for the right people to come into our lives, or forcing things to happen, we must learn to be patient and allow these types of people to come to us when the time is right. Searching for a soulmate can lead to personal compromises that result in sadness, so allow the universe to bring the right people to you at the right time.
