Men’s Basketball Recap of the Week

The Shoremen took on 3 opponents this past week, one being an exciting overtime victory against Cairn University. Haverford and Gettysburg were also in the mix this past week. After the win vs. Cairn on Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Shoremen took that momentum into Thursday’s game against Haverford College, closely falling 67-50. WC came out ready to fight on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Gettysburg College, but they lost 86-70.

Tuesday’s game against Cairn was a victorious moment for the Shoremen. WC started strong, taking an 11-6 lead with 15:06 left in the first half. Three of those points came from sophomore Josh Porteous.

Cairn took a 17-13 lead by scoring 11 of the last 13 points, and WC responded with a 12-2 run of their own to steal the lead. Towards the end of the first half, the Cairn Highlanders went on a 17-5 scoring spree to end the half 36-30. Trailing 40-30 with only a few minutes left in the second half, Porteous cut the lead to 44-38 with a tip-in. Trailing 68-55 with only 3:37 left in the second half, the Shoremen went on a 14-1 run to end regulation play tied at 69 apiece. Leading 76-75 in overtime, sophomore Austin Allen got the rebound to win the game for the Shoremen.

Senior Tas Dixon scored a team best of 16 points and had five assists. Sophomore Dallas Marshall was named the Chestertown McDonald’s Shoremen Player of the Game for his efforts in the paint. He recorded 11 rebounds and 12 points, along with five assists and three blocks, all of which are career highs for Marshall.

Thursday’s game against Centennial Conference opponent Haverford College was a tough match for WC from the beginning. Trailing 12-8 just minutes into the game, the Fords went on a 10-0 run to bring the lead to 22-8 with 11:14 left in the first half.

WC then went on a run of their own to bring the deficit to only 22-16, scoring eight points, six of them coming from back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Jack Greer.

The Fords took charge once again and ended the first half leading 35-23. Coming back in the second half, Haverford went on a small run, only gaining five points. With 8:32 left in the game, the Fords blew it open with a 12-0 run for the final score of 67-50.

Both Allen and Greer had eight-point highs during the game, while Dixon was credited five assists on the night. Freshman Logan Bunch was also awarded six rebounds on the game.

For the second Centennial Conference match of the week, WC took on Gettysburg. WC started the game with an 8-4 lead only 3:08 into the game. The lead came thanks to a three-pointer from Porteous. The Bullets answered with a 7-0 run, bringing the score to 11-8. They continued that run until 7:19 left in the first half, leaving WC trailing 24-17. Dixon’s layup allowed WC to sneak back in, going on a 21-12 run. This gave them a 38-36 lead with 14 seconds left in the first half. As the second half approached, the game was tied, each team at 45 points. The Bullets took the lead with 13:54 remaining in the second half. The Bullets would take that lead right into an 86-70 victory.

Freshman Barry McCormick had an outstanding game, scoring 13 points to set a career high and tie for team best. Porteous also scored 13 points that night and Dixon scored 10, with a game-best of six assists. Marshall also had a team-high of seven rebounds and two blocks.

Up next for the Shoremen is a non-conference game at Elizabethtown College in Pa. at 12 pm on Dec. 10.
