The Washington College baseball team contested a road double header last weekend at Muhlenberg College.

WC raced out to an early 5-0 lead before a Mules rally saw the home team come back and prevail 7-5.

“The Centennial Conference in baseball is extremely competitive and every team is capable of beating any other on any given day. It comes down to who executes better and gets the job done when it matters,” Head Coach Cory Beddick said.

In the top of the first inning, senior Matt Tancredi was able to drive in the game’s opening run as his base hit to center scored fellow senior Ryan Donnelly.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of fourth when it was déjà vu for the Shoremen as Tancredi singled to drive in Donnelly again and increase the lead to 2-0.

WC tacked on three more runs before the inning was over and led 5-0 before the Mules comeback ensued.

In the second game, the Mules took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and did not surrender that advantage on their way to an 8-1 win in game two of the day.

Sophomore pitcher Matt Furlong suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 3-1 on the year. He pitched four 2/3 innings, surrendered nine hits and five runs.

Tancredi continued to produce at the plate and went 1-4 with a run.

Junior Luke D’Ostilio went 1-3 behind the plate and registered a run batted in as well.

The softball team traveled on the road last weekend and played a doubleheader at Haverford College.

In the first game, the Fords took an early lead after a two-run home run with two outs scored the game’s opening runs.

Senior Taylor Harcum doubled to right field with two outs to score senior Allyson Meil and get WC on the board.

“It felt good to be able to get a timely hit for our team and help us score a run,” Harcum said.

After the Fords added another run in the bottom of the third and fourth inning, WC was unable to get the tying run to the plate in the last three trips to bat and fell 4-1.

Junior pitcher Maddie Bennett fell to 2-2 on the season and surrendered five hits and four runs while striking out six batters.

WC was able to jump on the board first in the second game.

Sophomore Rachel Butler hit a homerun in the top of the second inning to give WC an early 1-0 lead.

They added two more runs and carried a 3-0 lead and no-hit bid by Harcum into the bottom of the last inning.

The Fords were able to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh and spoil Harcum’s no-hit bid and the Shorewomen’s chances at leaving with a win.

“We are looking forward to finishing the season strong and want to continue to work hard at practice and take each game one inning at a time,” Butler said.
