Who says you can’t put the fun in fundraiser? The Relay for Life will take place on April 14 from 6-10 p.m. at the Kirby Jr. Stadium. According to the American Cancer Society, “Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society [and] is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries.”
All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this fundraiser. According to the World Health Organization, nearly one in six deaths are caused by cancer, and it is the goal of the American Cancer Society to bring attention to these statistics and further the current developments for cancer research.
Prospective participants can either sign up for Relay with a group of friends and form a team, or you can also sign up as a single participant.
There are a variety of different activities that are being hosted throughout the night that encourage participation from all members. There is an array of club sports as well as different competitions and mini games including dodgeball, a scavenger hunt, capture the flag, a Chipotle eating contest, and much more.
An Honoree Dinner will be taking place before Relay begins. Here, residents of Kent County who have survived or are currently being treated for various types of cancer will have a gathering in which their courageous efforts against their diseases will be acknowledged and applauded.
In addition to the dinner, the honorees will be taking the first lap around the track at the Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium before the rest of the participants follow shortly behind and will continue to complete these laps for the remainder of the night.
The executive chairs of the event, junior Sabrina Jenkins and sophomore Kylie Weiss, said they were particularly excited about being able to host these cancer patients and survivors.
“It’s really cool to see what you’re fundraising for and how it has affected their lives,” Jenkins said.
With all of the events and honorees that will be present, it is clear that anyone who plans on participating in Relay for Life will not experience a dull moment.
If students are unable to take part in the event, there are still many ways in which they can express their support for cancer awareness. WC Relay for Life is currently accepting donations through cash, Venmo, credit cards, Paypal, and other forms.
