The Shorewomen have been dominating their season starting 2-1 in conference play, going 5-1 for the first time in Washington College women’s soccer history.
The second of those conference games took place Wednesday, Sept. 19 as the Shorewomen took on the Bryn Mawr Owls on the turf of Kibler Stadium.
The game ended in a remarkable 8-1 win for the Shorewomen, scoring an even four goals per half. Seven players were able to get one or more shots on goal.
One of the goal scorers was senior captain Lindsey Russell, who said the team was elated to have won by that margin.
“We wanted to treat this particular game with composure and confidence, and as a full team we were successful in doing that,” she said. “It’s always an exciting day when you can get to see a player score her first collegiate goal, so a huge highlight for our team was being there to see Kelsey Hall attain that. As a teammate, seeing that pride on her face … those are the types of moments we’ll never forget.”
Women’s soccer Head Coach Tom Reilly was also pleased with the outcome.
“The performance against Bryn Mawr was excellent. We scored goals by combining well, we executed our corners very well, and we defended as a unit. Everyone who stepped on the field maintained a high level of play,” he said.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, the team traveled to Johns Hopkins University for a conference game. The Shorewomen fell to the Blue Jays 4-1.
Prior to the game, Reilly noted the competitive nature of Hopkins, preparing to face a tough team.
“Obviously, today at Hopkins who are ranked No. 8 in the nation, we will be severely tested, but it will give us a good idea of what we need to improve on as our season progresses,” he said.
With their nearly undefeated record, the WC women’s soccer team will go on to face their next opponent in a conference match at home versus McDaniel College on Sept. 29.
Beginning at 4 p.m., this game serves as the Shorewomen’s “These Hands Don’t Haze” game on Kibler Field.
