On Wednesday, Sept. 26, the Washington College field hockey team fell to St. Mary’s College of Maryland in a rainy and intense game that ended in a tight 2-1 score. All three goals of the match were scored during the second half after a delay of 92 minutes due to inclement weather over the halftime period.
The WC Shorewomen’s singluar goal was scored by senior forward Clare Ingersoll, who went on to be voted Shorewoman of the game.
“At the end of the first half we were tied 0-0, and the lightning delay was pretty unfortunate. St. Mary’s is a solid team and they challenged us by pushing the pace of the game. We are looking forward to more conference play and this game highlighted a few things that we can work on to be as competitive as possible for the rest of the season,” she said.
The Shorewomen played again last week on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. on the turf in Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium as they swept the McDaniel Green Terror in a 4-1 win. Goals were scored by sophomores Grace Steele and Kaylin Brandt, as they totaled two goals each.
The first goal was scored by Steele off an assist from senior Olivia Auer. Auer crossed the ball across the circle and Steele swept the ball into the cage.
The second goal was scored by the same duo, Auer assisting to Steele to make the score 2-0 seven minutes into the first half.
Brandt contributed her first goal of the game less than a minute later, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Shorewomen’s fourth goal came in the beginning of the second half when Brandt carried the ball through the middle and shot off her reverse, slamming a shot into the cage.
Additionally, with six saves and one goal allowed, sophomore Kayla Zapcic recounted that “I think we really came together and implemented everything we’ve been practicing. We are all super excited to get another conference win and it was exciting to see a lot of newer faces on the field. All around it was an awesome team win with a lot of contributors.”
The WC field hockey team improved their overall record to 2-8 and will move forward in the Centennial Conference to 2-2. The Shorewomen play their next home game on Saturday, Oct. 6 versus Dickinson at 1 p.m.
