Swim teams win and lose

The Washington College Swim teams beat out Salisbury University on Saturday, Nov. 7, but lost to the Swarthmore College on Saturday Nov. 4.

The Shoremen won over Sea Gulls 123-80, but did not fare so well against the Garnet, losing 194-61.

The Shorewomen shared the same fate, winning at Salisbury 127-76 and losing at Swarthmore 69-191.

Tuesday’s victory over the Sea Gulls by the Shoremen is another in the history books as the Shormen have won the past 27 out of 28 meets between the two teams.

The Shoremen had some impressive performances on Tuesday against the Sea Gulls, as the Shormen won nine out of 11 events.

The first event was the 200-meter medley relay which the Shoremen won with a time of 1:52.18, thanks competitors sophomore Andrew Feeley and juniors Teague Sauter, Aidan Sullivan, and Jake Brown.

Sophomore Leo Johnson and Feeley won two individual events each. Johnson won the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:54.01 and the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 54.41.

Feeley won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:18.61 and the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.61.

Junior Brendan Jones won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:21.99 and was second in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:59.98.

Brown, junior Seth Wrigley, and sophomore Brett Edwards all came in first in one event.

Brown won the 50-meter freestyle in 24.00, Wrigley won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.32, and Edwards won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.38.

Freshman Joseph Bozzi and junior Aidan Sullivan both placed second in one even each, with Bozzi getting second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:21.65, while Sullivan took second in the 100-meter freestyle in 54.81.

Although the Shoremen lost to the Garnet some swimmers managed to make amazing performances.

Feeley won first in the 200 backstroke with the  1:54.66. He was also second in the 100 backstroke in 54.14. Edwards won the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.18. Sullivan placed second in the 100 freestyle in 49.35.

Freshman Nate Braddock’s third-place time of 10:21.05 in the 1000 freestyle moved him up from the 10th- to ninth-fastest swimmer in Shoremen history in that event.

The Shorewomen opened the meet by winning the 200 meter-medley relay with the team of sophomore Allison Gallagher, freshman Emily Homer, freshman Anna Hall, and senior Julia Portmann in 2:13.16.

Portmann went on to win both the 200-meter freestyle in 2:14.83 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:12.41.

Senior Tricia Markey won the 800-meter freestyle in 10:05.73 and was second in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:05.60.

Freshman Alexa Luecke won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:48.77 and placed second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:15.39.

The Shorewomen also lost against the Garnet. Portmann scored the Shorewomen’s only first-place finish, winning the 500 freestyle in 5:18.84.

The Shoremen and Shorewomen are now both 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference.

Next week WC Swimming will be at St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Friday, Nov 16 and will be facing Bryn Mawr College at home on Saturday Nov. 17.
