On Saturday, Feb. 3 the Washington College men’s and women’s swim teams hosted Ursinus College for their penultimate dual meet of the season. The Shoremen lost to the Bears 152-103 and the Shorewomen lost 162-92.
Despite the Shoremen’s loss, some swimmers still had winning performances. Junior Teague Sauter secured the Shoremen two first place finishes in both breaststroke events. Freshman Nate Braddock added the Shoremen’s only other first-place finish, winning the 500 freestyle in 4:54.38.
Braddock also came in third for the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:13.78, which makes him the Shoremen’s sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
The Shoremen had four other second place finishes with two from sophomore Andrew Feeley in the 100 and 200 backstroke. The others were by juniors Seth Wrigley and Brendan Jones, in the 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley. The Shoremen’s record slipped to 2-8 out of Conference and 0-5 in Conference with the loss.
The Shorewomen knew they had a tough match on Saturday as Ursinus was and still is undefeated. Even though the women’s team lost collectively, there were still some excellent performances by members of the team.
Senior Julia Portmann took home the Shorewomen’s only first place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:04.74.
The Shorewomen had some impressive second place finishes as well, including one by Portmann in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:24.8.
Freshman Teresa Draves placed second in the 400 individual medley in 4:49.30 to become the Shorewomen’s ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Seniors Tricia Markey and senior Anna Schmittle, junior Alex Searles, and freshman Anna Hall all also placed second in one event for the Shorewomen.
Despite this, Ursinus still managed to bear down on the women’s team, bringing them to an overall record of 3-8 and an in-Conference record of 1-5.
The Shoremen and women face off against McDaniel next Saturday, Feb. 9 at home for their Senior day meet, and final dual meet of the season.
