Pet of the week — Cocoa

Last week may have been  spent devouring Valentine’s Day chocolate, but sugar highs are only temporary.  Cocoa at the Animal Care Shelter is even sweeter than candy and has lots of love to give.

Cocoa is a Cane Corso mix with a brindled coat, supersonic tail wag, and a heart of absolute gold. Don’t let her big size or cropped ears scare you: Cocoa is a total goofball who loves ear scratches, dog treats, and resting her head on the nearest human to give them a chin-hug.

She was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owner, and though she is still being socialized, she is fantastic with people of all ages.

Cocoa greatly enjoys her current position of office dog for one of the HSKC staff members, and volunteers often come in to give her some ear scratches and get their “Cocoa Fix.”

According to J.P. Hooker, volunteer, education and outreach coordinator for Animal Care Shelter, Cocoa is dog selective at the moment, so it is hard to say if she would be comfortable in a home with other dogs.

Hooker said Cocoa is an attention hog, so it may be best if she’s the only canine in her household, so she can ham it up 24/7. She is also still getting behind the concept of cats, but she does well with horses.

Cocoa would be happiest in a home where she could have lots of playtime and space to spread out. Despite her six and a half years, she still has plenty of puppy energy. She is also quite large and strong, so an owner who could devote the proper care and cognizance to her walks would be the best fit. Hooker said that she is currently walked with a harness.

Cocoa is spayed, house-trained, and treat-motivated. She is loved dearly by the Animal Care Shelter community, and the staff will be so happy when she’s adopted by her forever family.

If anyone in the Chestertown community, including WC students and employees, is interested in rescuing Cocoa, they can fill out an adoption application online or in person at the Animal Care Shelter at 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, or call at 410-778-3648 and ask for J.P.
