On Saturday, April 13 the Shoremen took on the No. 1 ranked team in Division III, Salisbury University for the annual War on the Shore rival game.
The Shoremen lost in double-overtime to the Gulls 15-14. The Shoremen chased the Gulls in the first two quarters, but ended the half with a tie score of 6-6.
In the third quarter, the Shoremen outscored Salisbury 6-0, leaving the Gulls in the dust 12-6.
Salisbury retaliated in the fourth quarter, scoring another eight goals versus the Shoremen’s two for the period.
All in the last quarter, the Shoremen and Gulls volleyed possession after the 13-13 score was established with five minutes left. Junior Cooper Sloan added a goal to the scoreboard with a minute and twenty-eight seconds left on the clock, calling a timeout after.
The Shoremen scrambled to maintain possession and run out the clock, but Salisbury snagged an equalizing goal in the last three seconds of regulation play.
Going into overtime 14-14, the teams battled it out and remained 14-14 for the entire first overtime period.
The Gulls won the faceoff in the second overtime, and scored after various turnovers from both teams in the last two minutes. Salisbury ended the game 15-14.
Sloan had five goals and one assist, senior Trey Ritter had four goals, senior Kevin Trapp had two goals and two assists, senior Nick Boyles had four assists, and senior Casey Grieves had three goals and one assist.
Sophomore goalie Chris Del Rosario had a career-high in saves with 26, beating his previous high of 22. He was named Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game for the third time in his career as well as being named Shoremen of the Week.
“It was a tough loss but we’re going to learn from the mistakes we made and clean some things up to get ready for F&M on Saturday,” Del Rosario said. “We are just going to come out and play hard until the full 60 minutes are up and leave no room for regrets.”
This game was the first time in 53 games between Salisbury and Washington College to go into double overtime and is also the first time in history of the series where in two straight meetings the teams have gone into overtime. Last year, the Shoremen lost to Salisbury 7-6 in single overtime.
Prior to War on the Shore, the team took on Haverford College on Wednesday, April 10 at home. The Shoremen beat the Fords 16-12 and held a 54-42 advantage in shots and forced 14 turnovers from Haverford.
Senior Casey Grieves led the team in goals, having four and two assists. He was followed by senior captain Trey Ritter with three goals and two assists.
Sophomore Joe Tobin and senior Kevin Trapp both had three goals and senior Nick Boyles had a career-high of four assists.
Junior Cody Pascale had two goals, junior Cooper Sloan had one goal and two assists.
Freshman Lawrence Park led the team with 11 ground balls, as well as having one assist. Sophomore Chris Del Rosario had a total of 14 saves during the game and allowed 12 goals.
The Shoremen take on No. 13 ranked Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, April 20 at home.
