Both the men’s and women Washington College lacrosse teams faced off against two Centennial Conference opponents in their last games of the regular season.
On Wednesday, April 24, the Shoremen battled Swarthmore College in a game that ended in a 12-7 win for WC.
“Our strategy is to just go out there and play as hard as we can,” senior Cole Handy said. “Being a senior, I want to savor every game we have left and enjoy this last experience of competitive lacrosse.”
The Shoremen started off with a heavy lead, outscoring the Garnets in every quarter with the exception of the last.
Junior Cooper Sloan garnered the Shoremen’s first goal only two minutes into the game. Almost immediately followed by a goal from senior Kevin Trapp and back-to-back goals by senior Casey Grieves.
Grieves went on to find eight goals for the Shoremen leading him to his 100th career goal and 150th career point.
Additionally, Sloan led the team in assists, freshman Lawrence Park led in ground balls, and sophomore Chris Del Rosario led the team in saves.
“This was a great Conference win for us,” Del Rosario said. “It was great being able to take down Swarthmore in one of our last Centennial Conference games.”
The Shoremen played their last game of the regular season—and of their season as a whole—as they fell to Gettysburg College 12-8, disqualifying them from the playoffs and effectively ending their season.
The Shoremen and the Bullets remained neck and neck well into the fourth quarter.
With a score of 8-7, they led by only one goal. In the last 25 minutes of the game, the Bullets managed to outscore the Shoremen 4-1, ending the game with a 12-8 loss for the Shoremen and securing No. 9 Gettysburg’s spot in the playoffs.
In this game, seniors Carson Metzker, Trey Ritter, Kevin Trapp, Kevin Wilson, Cole Handy, Nick Boyles, JP Crowley, Brady O’Neil, Charlie Walker and their manager, Adam Roth, played as Shoremen for the last time.
The Shoremen ended their 2019 season with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-4 conference record and will make their next appearance in the spring.
The women’s lacrosse team also took on Swarthmore College on Wednesday, April 24 where the Shorewomen remained victorious in a 16-4 win.
During the match, senior Cecily Docktor was able to break the school record for draw controls in a single-season. Additionally, junior Lauren Brenner led the team with six goals in their 16-goal win, senior Alison Pantazes led the team in assists, and senior Isabella Richardson led the team in saves during the contest.
This win led the No. 25 Shorewomen to an 11-5 overall record and a 7-1 Conference record as they geared up to face No. 2 Gettysburg on Saturday, April 27.
During the game against reigning Division III Champion Gettysburg College, the Shorewomen faced their second Conference loss of the season as they fell 16-13 to the Bullets.
The Bullets took an early 2-0 lead and the Shorewomen responded with five-straight goals, only to be met with four more consecutive goals from the Bullets.
As these two top-ranked teams continued to battle it out, the Bullets continued to outscore the Shorewomen by a slight margin in both halves, winning them the game.
“It was tough to lose a Conference match,” said sophomore defender Meghan Dean. “But I know we’re only better for it and we plan to do better when we see them again in our game next Saturday and continue to do well into the postseason of Centennial Conference playoffs.”
