As the fall semester keeps rolling by, it’s this time of year that some of the best —and Oscar worthy— movies come out. Below is a list of movies to see when they are released.
Hustlers (Sept. 13) Although this movie came out last Friday, this one comes highly recommended. Not only does it have a ton of stars in it (Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, and Lizzo to name a few) but it tells the story of a group of former strippers who band together to scam their Wall Street clients. Based on the New York magazine’s 2015 article “The Hustlers at Scores” by Jessica Pressler, this crime drama will have people glued to their seats.
Ad Astra (Sept. 20) What would a year be in Hollywood without a movie set in space, especially a movie about finding your missing father? Brad Pitt plays the protagonist, Astronaut Roy McBride, who “undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe,” according to IMdB.
Parasite (Oct. 11) A popular winner of the film festival circuit, this dark-comedy thriller shows the life of a lower class South-Korean family that forms a relationship with a wealthier family, only to get sucked into an unfortunate incident. The actors to pay attention to in this film are Kang-ho Song, Sun-kyun Lee, and Yeo-jeong Jo.
Jojo Rabbit (Oct. 18) Imagine if you were a ten-year-old kid growing up in World War II Germany and your imaginary friend was Hitler. That’s exactly the road this movie goes down. Directed by Taika Waititi, who also directed “Thor: Ragnarok” and “What We Do In the Shadows,” this movie follows young Jojo, who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic and struggles with his moral compass.
Waves (Nov. 1) This movie, produced by A24 and directed by Trey Edward Shults, follows the story of a suburban African-American family working through what Letterboxd described as “love, forgiveness and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.” Starring Sterling K. Brown, this drama will have people reaching for tissues in the theater.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Nov. 22) Everyone knows that the movie to pluck the heartstrings of nostalgia will be a hit in the box office. Finally, we are getting a movie that tells the story of the great Mr. Rogers, portrayed by Tom Hanks, who managed to confront kids and teach them valuable life lessons through a T.V. screen.
The Irishman (Nov. 27) For anyone who gets a thrill out of watching mobster movies, this one is for you. Starring Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, this cinema masterpiece tells the story of mob hitman Frank Sheeran, who claimed to have killed labor leader Jimmy Hoffa back in 1975. Instead of being released to the big screen, this movie will be released on Netflix in late November.
Now go forth with your sodas and popcorn and catch the latest flicks before they leave the big screens (or Netflix).
