The Washington College Men’s Soccer team improves their overall conference record with a win over McDaniel College on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Green Terror’s stadium.
The Green Terror took control of the game early, scoring the first goal of the match less than 15 minutes into the game.
Freshman Cole Gifford worked to get the Shoremen back into the running shortly after an assist from sophomore Eric Gwadz, only to have the Green Terror to strike back and leave the first half at 2-1.
This is when junior Greg Adams took control of the match in order to bring home the win for the Shoremen. Adams scored his first goal of the match at 82:20, when senior Kyle Gaeffke sent a ball cross field for Adams to finish off.
This put the Shoremen and the Green Terror neck-and-neck by the end of the second half and sent the teams into their first and only round of overtime.
Adams led his team to victory with a shot in overtime off an assist by junior James Strine, effectively ending the game in a 2-1 conference win for the Shoremen.
“The game was an all-around great team effort which resulted in an important win for our season,” said Adams.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Shoremen faced off against another contender of the Centennial Conference as they played the Dickinson Red Devils on their home turf.
The Red Devils came out strong, scoring the first two goals of the match, one in the first and another in the second.
It took the Shoremen a while to pick up their game, but they were finally able to make a difference off of a goal rebounded by Gaeffke after a shot by Strine bounced out of the hands of the Dickinson goalie.
“We played really hard and effectively on the field,” said Strine. “We just decided to play with this intensity a little too late.”
The Shoremen took this momentum and had several more shots on goal before the game ended, however, none of them were able to find the goal.
“It was a tough match up,” said junior Aidan Chadam. “The results don’t reflect how hard we played during the game and we hope to take our next conference match going forward.”
Between these two conference matches, this left the Shoremen with an overall record of 6-5-1 and a conference record of 1-3-1.
The team will face off against Catholic University on Tuesday, Oct. 15 as they host their final non-conference match of the season.
